AirTag: Apple’s New Item Tracking Accessory

On April 20, 2021, Apple has finally unveiled its much-rumored AirTag, a powerful accessory to track items. Users can use it with their iPhone (with iOS 14.5 or later versions) and iPad (with iPadOS 14.5 or later versions). AirTag is a quite simple, secure, and private way to find and locate your belongings. It works with Apple’s Find My app.

While announcing AirTag, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing said that ‘We’re excited to bring this incredible new capability to iPhone users with the introduction of AirTag, leveraging the vast Find My network, to help them keep track of and find the important items in their lives.’ She continued talking about the features & benefits of the new iPhone accessory by stating, ‘With its design, unparalleled finding experience, and built-in privacy and security features, AirTag will provide customers with another way to leverage the power of the Apple ecosystem and enhance the versatility of iPhone.’

Now, let’s evaluate the above statement and discuss some of the features and benefits of AirTag.

Compact & Lightweight Design

The design of AirTag is quite compact and lightweight. However, despite this, the accessory is IP67 water- and dust-resistant and has an in-built speaker. It makes sounds and helps users to find AirTag more easily.

Easy Setup

The setup is also pretty easy and magical. You only have to bring the item tracking accessory, i.e., AirTag, to your iPhone. And then, it gets connected to your phone. You can even assign this newly launched Apple device to a particular item and name it significantly for better tracking.

Personalizations

For more personalization, Apple allows the users to customize their AirTag via free engraving, including text and even some emojis.

New & Wholesome Finding Experience

After connecting and setting up the AirTag with your iPhone, see it in the Find My app. You can find it under the new Items tab. Whenever you want to know the location of your item, just visit the Find My app.

You can find the item quite easily if it is under the range of your phone’s Bluetooth. Just ask the Find My app to make a sound via AirTag. You can even do it using Siri.

Apple-Designed U1 Chip

The AirTag comes with a U1 chip. It is an Apple-designed chip. It uses Ultra-Wideband technology. The most prominent benefit of this technology is that it offers quite accurate and precise information about the distance and direction of the AirTag. However, for this, the item must be in the range.

Along with the features and benefits, here is the other information that you must know about AirTag.

What If The AirTag Gets Separated From The Owner

Do not worry if the AirTag gets separated from you or gets out of range. You can still find it easily using the Find My app. The program uses its network and approaches other Apple devices to detect the signal of lost AirTag. And then, after getting the signal, it notifies the users about the location.

There is also an option to put the AirTag in lost mode. After doing so, you get notified by the app once you get in range of the lost item, or it gets detected by the app network. If someone finds your lost AirTag, they can also help you to get it returned to you by tapping the accessory with their iPhone or any NFC-capable device. After that, they get redirected to a website that shows the contact details of the owner.

For the users who are blind or have a low-vision, Apple has provided the feature to find AirTag via voiceover.

What About Privacy & Security

Just like always, Apple has kept the privacy and security of users as a top priority this time as well. AirTag keeps all your information private and secure. It doesn’t even store any of your location data physically. And the interaction with the Find My app and network are end-to-end encrypted. The accessory completely discourages any sort of unauthorized tracking.

What is The Price

The price starts at $29 and may vary depending on your geographical location. The AirTags are available in one and four packs. And they’ll get available for purchase on April 30, 2021.

The AirTag Hermès Accessory

In association with Hermès, Apple is also introducing the AirTag Hermès. It will have a graceful and stylish collection of handcrafted leather accessories such as Bag Charm, Key Ring, Travel Tag, and Luggage Tag. They will come with a custom-engraved AirTag.

More About Find My Network Accessory Programme

The new Find My network programme of Apple even allows third-party products and accessories to add support for tracking. It enables the manufacturer to develop finding features and capabilities in their devices & other products via the Find My network. However, they must not compromise with privacy and security.

Apple’s Commitment Towards Nature & Environment

Apple is pretty much concerned about the environment. The tech giant has carbon-neutral global corporate operations. They plan to have a net-zero impact on the environment and climate by 2030. Following this commitment towards nature, Apple’s AirTag is going to use 100% recycled tin. It also does not use any harmful substances. They have kept the accessory energy efficient. The packaging is also done via wood fiber that is either recycled or from the well-managed forests.
